Isn't this overkill? How about "I am an American". In my 40 years of life, I have never heard from us 'white' folk the word 'nigger' used as much as it is used by 'black' Americans. Again, we not call all of us "AMERICAN"? We are all here reaching for the same goals. I didn't see in my lifetime slavery. I didn't see degradation of women. I only see certain people taking full advantage of this illusion of the past, and running with it. Really Dr., how do you feel about this? I heard you stating "African" American throughout your discussions. I ask you as an American to look at what you say and what I am saying to you. Consider talking in a different manner about your fellow brothers in America. As an educator in higher education, I want to add my call for rising awareness against cyberbullying at the college level as well as K-12, as this week's tragedy with Tyler Clemnti attests. This first-year Rutgers student, just 18 years old, committed suicide after his roommate thought it would be funny to record the boy's homosexual experience from a computer videocam in the room they shared, then broadcast it over the internet using Twitter to alert friends to tune in. Homophobia was part of what fueled this invasion of privacy. We have the power in this world of Media 2.0 to broadcast our own messages--let's make sure that we use this power wisely and not add to the homophobia and hatred. Thank you, Sikivu, for helping to fight this scourge.Katie Millsnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1021643873630667397.post-15750050254777811532010-10-06T16:23:14.422-07:002010-10-06T16:23:14.422-07:00Very thoughtful response on the racist assaults fa...Very thoughtful response on the racist assaults facing Latinos amidst claims that we have somehow arrived at a "post-racial" moment in our country. When we look around at segregated "inner city" communities churches--from storefront to mega--are often the only visibly "sustainable" social institutions, by dint of the capitalist drain on poor black and brown urban communities, i.e., the absence of commercial development, living wage jobs and (for youth/families) recreational centers and green space. The religion industry fills and capitalizes on this vacuum.Sikivuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18421641001672980440noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1021643873630667397.post-48955712286456683982010-09-23T20:23:40.666-07:002010-09-23T20:23:40.666-07:00On a related topic, these prosperity pastors and p...On a related topic, these prosperity pastors and prosperity churches should be taxed because they prosper from congregants' tithes and offerings which they often say is demanded by God and the Bible and then go and use that wealth for their own benefit in "business empires" made out of believers faith in their unimpeachable "spiritual and charitable credentials".Cmehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05616644936975935903noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1021643873630667397.post-82030127735540001262010-09-23T19:53:14.409-07:002010-09-23T19:53:14.409-07:00We are now seeing more and more of this "enli...We are now seeing more and more of this "enlightened by God" pastors in latino america.<br />At the same time, I think there is a bunch of frightened people that are willing to give all they have (i.e. money, properties, childresn, spouses, themselves) only to get in change a big lie: certitude.
